Hundreds of tomato growers in Chickaballapur district, who have harvested a bumper crop this season, are in distress. With the steep fall in the demand and price, farmers are throwing away huge quantities of tomatoes. With few buyers for their produce, farmers in many taluks have neither picked tomatoes nor watered their farms in the past 10 days. According to H.S. Narendra, President, Bagepalli Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Yard Traders` Association, the daily demand is 200 kg of tomato while the supply was a whopping 3,000 kg. www.hindu.com - 02 March 2010 |
