India: rains damage vegetable crops in tribal region
Frequent rains for last one week have hit the vegetable crops in Koraput region.
The district recorded four good rain days which is uncommon in the previous years. Heavy winds accompanied by rains have affected the vegetable crops that were in harvesting stage.
Vegetables growers lamented that cauliflowers, cabbage, tomato which were cultivated in over 2,000 acres of land have been damaged in the recent rains. Farmers have been forced to harvest the damaged vegetables to get at least the labour cost.
Most of the vegetables that were earlier being sold at above Rs 15, are now sold at just Rs 5 to Rs 8 hitting the farmers hard.
Agriculture officials, however, said that the sudden change of climate will be beneficial for paddy harvesting.
